Clarence artists participating in Buff State fashion show

Clarence artists Carol Ann Rice Rafferty and Kara Rice Rafferty will have their collections included in Buffalo State College Runway 4.0 Fashion Show, which will be held at 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16. Tickets can be purchased at any Wegmans.

Carol Ann Rice Rafferty is a Clarence artist and business owner of Rice Rafferty, a small mother daughter cottage industry featuring one-of-a-kind wearable art designs. Her collection is inspired by recycling, regeneration and re-purposing. She also designed art pieces with her daughter, Kara, called “Trashions” made from plastic bags for the VIP party.

Rice Rafferty is an alumna and former adjunct instructor. She’s donating a prize basket to a fiber design student after the show.

She said the inspiration to make the “Trashions” from shopping bags came while she listened to NPR radio while working in her studio and heard callers discuss how the economic recession was impacting them.

“I began thinking people were in such economic distress that we would ... have to make our garments from the throwaway bags,” she said.

She taught herself a way to melt layers of bags together to create her own “material.”
