Woodturning expert to visit Rockler Woodworking and Hardware

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has partnered with internationally renowned Robert Sorby Tools of England to present a demonstration on woodturning.

Woodturning differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood, and this form of woodworking has experienced a recent surge in popularity in the United States, according to information from Rockler.

This free demonstrations will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware, 5085 Transit Road. For more information, call 631-8922

Rockler will also offer 20 percent off all Sorby turning tools on demonstration day.

“We’re thrilled to have a Robert Sorby woodturning expert visit us,” says Rockler store manager Ed Jolls. “Having a chance to see and learn from a turner of this caliber is a special opportunity. Both our staff and our customers are eager to pick up new tips and techniques. And for those who haven’t tried woodturning before, it’s a great opportunity to see what it’s all about.”

According to Jolls, woodturning is a growing hobby.

“Access to the specialized tools and supplies needed to get into turning has vastly improved in terms of both availability and cost,” says Jolls. “We’re seeing many more new customers coming in to buy lathes and other turning supplies. We’ve responded by increasing our assortments, and we now carry hundreds of turning blanks, hardware, tools and supplies to make everything from bowls to pens.”
