Wrestling team finishes regular season 22-0

Clarence’s wrestling team finished its regular season Saturday with one final tournament title, giving the Red Devils their sixth championship after they had wrapped up a perfect 22-0 dual-meet record with wins over Sweet Home and Williamsville North earlier in the week.

Clarence, which is currently the top-ranked team in Section VI and 23rd in the state, honored seniors Adam Arena, Conor Fitzhenry, Christian Paulo, Brandon Grove and Nate Bartell during Wednesday’s 78-3 landslide victory over Sweet Home. Fitzhenry took his 145-pound match by pin to earn his 100th career varsity win to highlight the team’s dominant effort.

Clarence barely slowed down two nights later in crushing Williamsville North, 69-7.

“To finish the dual-meet season undefeated is a great accomplishment,” coach Jason Chase said. “We lost eight matches throughout the season last year, so it was a great team effort to get some of those losses back this year.”

The Red Devils took their solid momentum to Kenmore West Saturday for the annual Ken-Ton Tournament. Fitzhenry and Travis Griner (170) each earned their first tournament individual titles, with both triumphing over Kenmore West opponents in their respective final bouts.

Jake Weber (160) pinned his way through the tournament, while Ryan Burns (106), Brandon Glauber (120) and Nate Ward (285) all reached their weight class’s final with tight semifinal victories to finish second. Nate Schwab lost in the (152) semifinals to finish third, while Brendan Arena (106) and Paulo (138) earned fourth-place finishes in their weight classes.

“It was great to see Brendan and Christian avenge losses from last week and push their way into the placing rounds,” Chase said. “Every tournament, we had someone new step up and win big matches for the team. We are lucky to have a lot of great wrestlers and great leaders on the team.”

Clarence will begin its quest to earn representation at the state championships in Albany with this weekend’s Class AA Tournament in Jamestown. Any wrestler who finishes in the top five of their weight class will move on to next weekend’s Section VI Championships at Lake Shore — where winners automatically advance to states.

“Going into the postseason, we change our focus from team-oriented results and start to focus on where we can finish as individuals,” Chase said. “I believe we have a number of wrestlers who, on any given day, can make a legitimate run at winning a sectional title. Our goal is definitely to send some wrestlers to Albany.”
