World War II veteran and Clarence resident John L. Mosher was recently selected by state Sen. Michael H. Ranzenhofer as a New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame inductee for the 61st District for his gallantry in the U.S. armed forces and service to the community.

Drafted in March 1945, Mosher served as a rifleman and mortar gunner in Company H of the 88th Division of the 350th Regiment. He served in Tarcento, Italy, as a postwar peacekeeper on the Yugoslavian border until his honorable discharge in December 1946.

For nearly five decades, Mosher has been active with American Legion Post 838 in various roles, including post commander and member of the post board of directors. He also participates in both the Clarence Memorial Day Parade and Clarence Center Fire Company Labor Day Parade each year.

“I am very proud to be honoring John for his military service during the Second World War,” Ranzenhofer said. “Like so many of our veterans, he returned home from war and continued serving our community. He truly lives by his personal motto, ‘God put us here to help others.’”

Mosher received numerous awards for his distinguished service including: Army Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Theater Ribbon, European African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and WWII Victory Ribbon.

Mosher has been active with the Clarence Jaycees, Clarence Chamber of Commerce and Clarence Center Citizen’s Sewer Task Force. He has been president of St. John’s Lutheran Home for Children for 10 years, serving as a board member for 43 years. He has also been instrumental in developing a continuum care community at Niagara Lutheran Health Center.

“It has been such an honor to travel to the State Capitol and join so many distinguished veterans from across the state of New York as a member of the Veterans’ Hall of Fame,” Mosher said. “I feel very strongly about serving my fellow citizens. It was a wonderful experience for me and my fellow veterans. Thank you to Senator Ranzenhofer for nominating me.”

The New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame honors and recognizes outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves in military and civilian life.

Other inductees from the 61st District include Marine Sgt. Patrick Welch (2010); Army 2nd Lt. Ronald J. Pilozzi (2011); Marine Corps Master Sgt. Hal Kreter (2012); Staff Sgt. William R. “Billy” Wilson III (posthumously, 2013); and Army Spc. 5th Class James B. Neider (2014).
