Clarence defeats Frontier in Class AA playoff opener

Photo by Patrick McPartlandPurchase color photos at www.BeeNews.com Despite holding the ninth seed, the Clarence High School softball team is out there to prove any Class AA team has a shot at winning the title.

The Lady Red Devils did just that, defeating Frontier, 5-3, in the opening round of the Section VI Class AA playoffs.

The game took place May 21 at Clarence High School.

Clarence pitcher Christina Victor got the win, striking out nine ina7inningeffort.

Victor also contributed to her win on the offensive side, getting two hits, one of which was a double.

Claire Pullman had a big game at the plate as well.

Pullman went 3-for-3 with a triple in the win.

The biggest hitter earned the spot by making the game winning hit.

Ashley Ruszala hit a game-winning triple that scored the fourth run of the game for the Red Raiders.

The win gives Clarence some much-needed momentum as they went into the next round to play the Class AA top-seed Niagara Falls.

That game took place Tuesday at Niagara Falls High School.

However, the results of that game were not available at press time.

The winner of the Niagara Falls/Clarence game would advance to the semifinals and play the winner of Williamsville North and Niagara-Wheatfield.

The semifinal round will be played Thursday at 5 p.m.
