Billy Baroo’s Restaurant, located inside the dome, is gearing up for an Oktoberfest celebration, beginning with the launch of its all-new biergarten concept.

Owner Marc Richel, who has been leading operations at the restaurant since February 2012, says the menu and beer offerings are being revamped to cater to a growing demand for German fare.

“We’ll have a bit of a German flair but still have all of the same specialties here, like the club sandwich, fish fries and wings — all of the favorites that have been here forever,” Richel said. “I had been planning all summer to launch [the biergarten concept] in September.

“We have six new taps and remodeled the inside with a new floor. There is some new signage, and we have a Biergarten Mug Club coming where you can purchase a mug and store it here and put your name on it. Also, it gets you a 15 percent discount on future beers.”

In all, Billy Baroo’s will feature 12 craft brews on tap — both local and from around the world — as well as a varied selection of bottled craft beers. Also new to the bar area are high-top tables and new flat-screen TVs where patrons can catch a Bills or Sabres game as well as English Premiere League soccer.

At 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, the party will get under way at the biergarten grand reopening, which will feature food and drink specials all night as well as live music. Richel views it as Billy Baroo’s official kickoff to Oktoberfest.

The Lancaster resident and married father of two has been especially tied to golf his whole life, making Billy Baroo’s a labor of love.

A former sales representative for Nike Golf, Richel was introduced to the links at a young age working as a caddy in Grand Island where he grew up. When the former Murphy’s Restaurant in the golf dome went under two years ago, he saw an opportunity to take that passion for golf and breathe new life into the place.

“I have been in the golf business my whole life, and I was in the right place at the right time,” Richel said. “We were able to open up in about six weeks, which was kind of real fast. As fast as we could, we put everything into place and opened.

“We wanted to keep it a golf theme, and Billy Baroo is obviously the putter from [the film] ‘Caddyshack.’ That kind of ran alongside with the golf dome and the golf theme.”

The golf-themed restaurant may be adding new menu items through Oktoberfest, but customers won’t have to worry about any of the favorites, such as beef on weck, going away.

“We’ll still have all of the favorites, but we are introducing new items to the menu, like pretzel sticks with German beer-cheese sauce, ‘Brats and Tots’ — German bratwurst with tater tots and beer-cheese dipping sauce. It’s just the beginning of some of our new menu items.

“Everything will be coming out in the next few weeks, especially before the Oct. 5 party.”

In addition to the Oktoberfest offerings, Billy Baroo’s features live music, karaoke, open mic and trivia on Saturday nights. Billy Baroo’s is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday and is located inside the Wehrle Golf Dome at 8230 Wehrle Drive.
