State PTA sponsors event focusing on Common Core

The New York State Parent Teacher Association is sponsoring a town hall-style meeting to detail the state’s Common Core learning initiatives in school districts. The event is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Williamsville North High School, 1595 Hopkins Road at Dodge Road in Amherst.

State Education Commissioner John King or a representative from his office will be attending the meeting. Scheduled for discussion during the event will be topics related to the Common Core, including testing, impact on instructional time and content, implementation schedule, and security and privacy of student information.

King is hosting five such meetings in regions across the state. The event at Williamsville North is the only one scheduled to be held in Erie County.

The meeting will be divided into three parts: introduction, questions and statements.

For questions from the public, cards will be provided and collected, and questions will be read by the moderators.

Anyone wishing to make a statement will be able to speak no more than two minutes. People who seek to make a statement must also sign in upon arrival.
