Summer events around the corner in the hollow

JEAN O’CONNELL
President Clarence Hollow Association

Just a reminder, if you still have not renewed your membership to the Clarence Hollow Association for 2015, we hope you will take some time to do so. Please mail your check to Clarence Hollow Association, P.O. Box 422, Clarence, NY 14031. As we gear up for all of our spring and summer activities, your membership helps support things such as our beautification efforts, free concerts at the Asa Ransom House and our fireworks and musical entertainment at Hollowfest.

Before you know it, Memorial Day will be upon us. Once again, CHA is going to hold its chicken barbecue immediately following the parade and ceremony May 25 at Clarence Town Park. Dinners will be served from noon until they are all gone — usually around 2 p.m. We will also be having a drive-thru takeout this year. There will also be a raffle so stay tuned for what the prizes will be. The cost for a chicken dinner is $10, and hot dogs will also be available.

Summer gets into full swing with our free concerts on the lawn of the Asa Ransom House. The first one will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 25, and feature Shawn Duchscherer. He is a local talent who plays in many area venues and plays all types of music from jazz to country western. The second concert will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, and feature One Song. This is a country western group that performed several years ago and was very popular. The season finishes with another performance by Shakespeare in the Park from 6:20 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5.

I had the opportunity, as part of my grant consulting business, to speak in New York City at the Association of Towns meeting in February. Part of the conference includes vendor displays. I put on my “president of CHA” hat and spoke to vendors that sell Verdin clocks. You might have noticed the clock that is erected in front of the Bank of Akron in Clarence Center. It would be similar to that one. I brought back the information to the CHA board, and we all agree that a clock in the Hollow would be a nice addition. Shortly, I will be meeting with the salesman to discuss pricing of the different types of clocks and what might look good in the Hollow.

The clocks are extremely expensive, so when we come to a decision, I will let everyone know, and hopefully there will be some businesses or individuals who will want to contribute to this effort. There has not been a decision as to where we would locate the clock in the Hollow, but if you have a suggestion feel free to email me at joconnell@grantsareus.com and let me know your thoughts. We also would hope that landscaping can be added to the area to make it look even better.

One last reminder, we are always looking for new vendors at Hollowfest, which will take place July 2-4. We are looking for all types of vendors, not just food vendors. Contact Heather Milone at hmilone@grants areus.com or 759-8580. Mark your calendar now and come help us celebrate at Clarence Town Park.
