Christmas play set to open Dec. 7

“Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus,” written by Andrew J. Fenady, will premiere at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Ghostlight Theatre, 170 Schenck St. in North Tonawanda.

Performances will continue until Dec. 17, being held at 7 p.m. Thursdays; 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets cost $18 for general admission and $16 for veterans, students and seniors.

Tickets may be purchased by visiting www.starrynighttheatre.com or calling the box office at 743-1614.

The production, directed by DJ Swartz, features Jesse Swartz, Vanessa Stipkovits, Greg Blarr, Carla Kwasniak and Madison Swartz. Based on actual events in 1897, an 8-year-old girl named Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the New York Sun editor asking if Santa Claus was real.

The reply by Rochester, New York, journalist Frances Church remains the most reprinted editorial in human history. The play is adapted from the 1991 film of the same name with Charles Bronson and Richard Thomas.

The Ghostlight Theatre has been presenting an annual Christmas show since 1985. Past titles include “A Christmas Carol,” “The Homecoming,” “It’s A Wonderful Life” and “All Through the Night.”

Additionally, a food drive for a local food pantry is conducted in the theatre lobby before each performance.
