Housing organization offers college scholarship

Housing Opportunities Made Equal is accepting applications for the Joanne Champion Granger Scholarship, awarded each year to a college-bound high school senior who demonstrates high academic achievement along with a commitment to volunteerism and human rights.

Students awarded the scholarship must be residents of Erie or Niagara counties.

This year, through the auspices of Dr. Carl Granger, HOME will be awarding $1,500 to a first-place winner and $500 to two honorable mentions.

HOME will also give $100 to the first-place recipient’s nominating organization in thanks for its participation.

According to HOME representatives, Joanne Champion Granger was a high school science teacher whose roots in community activism and personal experience with housing discrimination in Buffalo gave her the determination to promote fair housing.

The scholarship was created in 1995 by her husband, Dr. Carl Granger, to honor her courage to fight for social justice, her commitment to education, and her inspiration to others.

Applications for the scholarship can be accessed at www.homeny.org.

Each applicant must meet the following additional criteria:

Maintain a “B” average or higher verified by a transcript from the applicant’s high school;

Write and submit an essay that demonstrates community involvement and commitment to human rights and /or fair housing — a maximum of three pages.

Be nominated by school personnel or a community leader familiar with the student’s activities, and the winner must attend the award ceremony at the annual dinner.

Completed scholarship applications are to be postmarked by Friday, Feb. 16, and the winners will be recognized at HOME’s 55th annual dinner to be held Friday, April 13, at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.
