Personal bests aplenty highlight swimmers’ efforts at Class A meet

Clarence’s boys swimming team “easily had our best meet of the year” Saturday, according to coach Eric McClaren, as the Red Devils finished seventh in the Class A portion of the Class Championship meets.

Following Friday’s diving competition – where Carter Diver placed fourth with 330.05 points and Landon Law took 12th with 285.65 points – the bulk of the competition took place on Saturday, where Patrick Quealy’s second-place effort in the 200 freestyle – a personal-best 1 minute, 51.97 seconds – highlighted the Red Devils’ efforts. Teammates Andy Porcelli (16th, 1:59.46) and Billy Flynn (22nd, 2:03.22) also posted personal-best times.

Quealy also finished the 100 free in a personal-best 51.53 seconds to place 11th in the event, just ahead of Nikita Andreyits, who placed 12th in 51.76. The two also teamed up with Porcelli and Matt Sausen to place seventh (3:33.88) in the 400 free relay, and with Andrei Tiu and Joe Glichowski to place seventh (1:32.63) in the 200 free relay.

Clarence’s other relay, the 200 medley relay of Tiu, Kevin Kong, Joe Glichowski and Dom Darlak, took ninth in 1:49.03.

Glichowski also took eighth (57.80) in the 100 butterfly, while Shawn Suen (2:15.49) and Jack Guerinot (2:18.63) took ninth and 12th, respectively, in the 200 IM. Guerinot (1:07.97) and Suen (1:09.33) also took 10th and 14th with their respective personal-best efforts in the 100 breaststroke, followed by teammate Matt Boundy (27th, 1:13.31).

Tiu also placed 15th (1:03.49) in the 100 backstroke and 17th (23.70) in the 50 free with personal-best efforts in both events.

Rounding out the team’s efforts included Andreyits (eighth, 23.23) in the 50 free, and both Porcelli (11th, 5:23.67) and Billy Flynn (17th, 5:32.42) in the 500 free.

For those who have qualified, the season continues Thursday and Friday with the Section VI Championships at the University at Buffalo. Clarence will have competitors in 12 events, including all three relays and the diving event.

Tiu, Kong, Glichowski and Andreyits will compete in the medley relay, while Tiu, Quealy, Andreyits and Glichowski will swim in the 200 free relay. Quealy, Andreyits and Porcelli will be joined by a fourth as-of-yet undetermined swimmer to round out the 400 free relay.

In individual events, Tiu will swim the 50 free and backstroke, while Quealy will swim the 100 and 200 frees. Porcelli will swim the 200 and 500 frees, while Suen will swim the IM and the breaststroke.
