Alexis Kirk wins individual state championship in rifle

Alexis Kirk became the first individual state champion in Clarence rifle coach Bob Neubauer’s 17 years with the squad Saturday with her winning score of 293 out of a possible 300 points in the three-position air rifle at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

In the prone and standing positions, Kirk finished in fourth place.

Kirk’s brother, Matt, finished third in the standing position in three-position competition and fifth overall in the 30-shot standing competition.

“Alexis and Matt are both amazingly talented,” Neubauer said. “I watched both of them all season and knew by their scores that either one of them could capture the state title. Both of them shot outstanding scores at states, but it so happened that Alexis’ scores were just enough better than Matt’s that she won the state title.”

To the best of Clarence athletics director Greg Kaszubski’s determination after going through the school record books, Alexis Kirk is the first individual state champion in rifle in school history.

Prior to the state championships, Clarence finished in second place at sectionals in the 30-shot standing and in fifth place in three-position competition. Clarence’s score of 1,114 out of a possible 1,200 points set a new school record in the process.

Individually, Mike Dziabo finished in second place in 30-shot standing portion of the competition, posting a score of 285 out of a possible 300 points. Alexis Kirk finished in fourth place with a score of 283. In three-position competition, Alexis Kirk finished in second place in the offhand position, posting a score of 96 out of 100, while Matt Kirk finished third with a score of 95 out of 100.

Matt Kirk also finished in fourth place in the kneeling position, posting a score of 98 out of 100.

Both Kirks were named Section VI all-stars for their respective performances.
