Wing Fest, Buffalo praised by British entry

Hi, David [Sherman]. I read your column about judging Buffalo wings. I enjoyed the read.

I wanted to say thank you to you and all the other judges at Wing Fest. Now that I have the experience of one Wing Fest under my belt, I understand that the tolerance level for heat between the U.K. and U.S. is a little different, lol.

A lot of people struggled with our hot stuff wing, yet that is just a normal flavour on our wings in the U.K. In hindsight, I should have submitted the Queen’s Choice Strawberry wing. We were getting so much great feedback for that wing.

If we come back next year, we’ll bring that one back plus some other new flavours. I really do love making people happy.

Buffalonians were so nice and treated us amazingly. Next time, I’ll create a wing especially for them. I also have a slogan for them: “Wings + Love = Buffalo.” Thank you to you and everyone in Buffalo.

Taste of Clarence a huge success

The Clarence Chamber of Commerce sends a big thank you to all the tremendous folks who attended this year’s Taste of Clarence. Residents saw some unique cars and had the opportunity to explore the Clarence cuisine.

There was an array of choices from Clarence’s finest. Our local judges gave Best Entree to the Bang Bang Shrimp from the Bonefish Grill. The Best Appetizer was Mooney’s Hog Wings. The winning dessert was Genevieve’s Cheesecakes & Bake Shop entry of key lime cheesecake.

The judging was difficult this year. After those votes were in, the big “Silver Spoon” award was announced. Can you believe that for the third consecutive year, Brennan’s Bowery Bar won? The award’s rules this year had been revised and stiffened to require voters to sign in to get their ballot so as to prevent any duplicate voting. Congratulations to Brennan’s.

No event is successful by itself, and many outstanding people too numerous to mention stood up to handle specific areas, and we extend a giant thanks to them.

Event Chairman Mark Medole, vice president of Emerling Insurance; Ashly Wrisley, director of chamber events; Amy Engler, office manager; and Alayne Donner deserve special thanks for making it happen.

Coincidentally, we also had our chamber golf outing the week before, chaired by Gabe Maddalena, manager of Lake Shore Savings Bank. Both events were well-attended, and we are happy to report both ended up profitable. We could not have done either of these without the help of our many great sponsors, volunteers and of course, our board of directors.

Thank you, and we look forward to the Taste returning in 2019.
